சிவபுராணம் (3)

பொருள்:

எல்லாவற்றையும் உடைமையாகக் கொண்டவனின் திருவடி போற்றி. எம் தந்தையாக நின்று அருளுபவனின் திருவடி போற்றி. ஒளி வடிவானவனின் திருவடி போற்றி. சிவன் எனப்பெறும் செம்பொருளின் சிவந்த திருவடி போற்றி. அடியார்களின் அன்பினில் நிற்பவனான தூயவனின் திருவடி போற்றி. நிலையாமை தன்மையுடைய பிறப்பினை நீக்கும் உயர்ந்தோனின் திருவடி போற்றி. சிறப்பு பொருந்தி விளங்கும் திருப்பெருந்துறையில் எழுந்தருளும் நம் இறைவனது திருவடி போற்றி.

English Transliteration:

Eesan adipotrri enthai adipottri
Dhesan adipotrri Sivan sevadi potrri
Neyatthe nindra nimalan adi potrri
Maaya pirapparukkum mannan adi potrri
Seeraar perunthurai nam Devan adi potrri

English Translation:

This particular verse praises the feet of Lord Shiva.

Praise to the feet of Eesan (Isha is another name of Ishvara, Shivan).
Praise to the feet of my father.

Praise to the feet of the one who is radiant.

Praise to the red feet of Lord Shiva.

Praise to the feet of one who stood in the love of the devotees and the one who is pure.

Praise to the feet of the one who releases us all from the impermanent cycle of births.

Praise to the feet of the King (of Universe).

Praise to the feet of the one who is divine that resides in the Avudaiyarkoil. (This particular temple is where this song get sung by the great saint Manickavasagar).

Word-by-word meaning:

1) Eesan = another name for Lord Shiva

2) Adi potrri = adi means feet, potrri means praise (this phrase gets repeated)

3) Enthai = my father (en means my, thanthai means father. Hence, 'enthai' refers to my father)

4) Dhesan = one who is radiant. This is a Tamilised word from Sanskrit word 'Tejas' which means brightness.

5) Sivan sevadi = the red feet of Lord Shiva

6) Neyatthe nindra = (he) who stood in the love of the devotees. Neyam means love or affection; neyatthe refers to 'in affection'; meanwhile, nindra refers to 'stood'.

7) Nimalan - the one who is pure.

8) Maaya pirapparukkum = the one who releases (all) from the impermanent cycle of births (samsara)

9) Mannan = king/lord

10) Seeraar perunthurai = is the name of Avudaiyarkoil, a temple located in Pudukkottai district of Tamil Nadu.
11) Nam Devan = Our Lord, Devan refers to one who is divine.
